GENETICS WORKSHOP

In an academic milestone, first-year students of batch 2023-2029 assembled for an immersive workshop focused on the genetics module. Organized by the department of biochemistry, the event was meticulously curated by esteemed faculty members Dr. Humera Usman and Dr. Zoha junaid, in collaboration with Dr. Mariam Sohail from the department of medical education, spanning a full day of intensive learning.
Central to workshop’s objectives were the cultivation of team-based learning strategies, the enhancement of analytical skills, the development of leadership qualities, and the fostering of creativity among participants. These aims collectively aimed to prepare students not only with theoretical proficiency but also with practical competencies necessary for their future roles in scientific research and innovation within the field.
The class was organized into nine distinct groups, each guided by a designated facilitator from the faculty. Over a preparation period of three weeks, these groups were tasked with delving into specific topics related to genetics.
The facilitators and their corresponding topics were allocated as follows:

  • Dr. Kirn E Muneera - Genetic Techniques
  • Dr. Maheen Tahir- Translation
  • Dr. Humera Usman- Transcription
  • Dr. Hania Rashid – Telomeres And Their Relation To Aging And Cancer
  • Dr. Zoha Junaid- Genetic Mutations
  • Dr. Nadia Amanat - Nucleotide Metabolism
  • Dr. Zainab Yousafzai- Dna Repair
  • Dr. Maleeha Salik – Replication
  • Dr. Humera, Dr Zoha - The Future Of Genetics

During the workshop, Dr. Humera Usman, recognized for her proficiency in Biochemistry, delivered the inaugural address, laying the foundation for a day characterized by interactive sessions and practical demonstrations. Guided by these experienced facilitators, each group conducted thorough research and meticulously prepared their assigned topics. Their efforts culminated in presentations, skits, models, and interactive games, all aimed at enriching the collective learning experience of the entire class.
Dr. Mariam Sohail, from the Department of Medical Education, meticulously crafted pretests and post-tests for each workshop topic. These assessments included Individual Readiness Assurance Tests (iRAD) and Team Readiness Assurance Tests (tRAD), which were administered via the Socrative application. These tests aimed to assess individual and team readiness to effectively engage with the instructional content in the specific field.
Throughout the workshop, these assessments served as crucial instrument for continuously evaluating student learning. Both pre-tests and post-tests were conducted before and after each group presented their assigned topics. This structured approach provided faculty with a robust framework to measure the depth of understanding among students, ensuring alignment with the workshop's educational objectives. It also offered valuable insights into the progress of individual students and the collaborative learning dynamics within teams, thereby enhancing the overall educational experience.
The workshop was honored by the presence of Vice Principal Dr. Mazhar Hussain and esteemed members of the faculty of FMC. Students showcased their research at dedicated stations, engaging in insightful discussions with both guests and the audience. Following the presentations, awards were conferred in several categories:
